Ienjoyed Laverne in Orange in the New Black but her attempts to channelTim Curry's origination of Frank-N-Furter is embarrassing: the Britishaccent is all over the place, often with an American twang at the endof phrases, and often sounded like it's being strangled out of her. Other references, in other parts of the film: the invitation to watch a Steve Reeves movie, the Mona Lisa, the Titanic, American Gothic, Faye Wray, King Kong, Dr. The best part of the moviewas Tim Curry, I just wish he had more screen time. However, the production does suffer badly from being too clean and too glamorous in production values when part of the film's charm was its decadence and that it feels far too watered down and too safe, there's very little to none of the sense that the film pushed boundaries or what made it so daring, wickedly naughty and unique. In my opinion, that's not important, because you will be able to appreciate the movie more, if you know a few things about it.

The references: picking up the numerous references, both visual as well as in dialogue and song, is part of the fun in watching this film. Laverne Cox, while extremely talented, was totally wrong for Frankenfurter. The craziness of the story combined with the adoration of the audience elevated the film to a whole 'nuther level. We-e-e-elcome to the Late Night Double Feature Picture Show! Frank-N-Furter really left me wanting more from the performance. Original movie was about discovering your sexuality, this one is about.

I try not to let it interfere with my enjoyment of the film itself, if I can. Yet, that still would not have saved the show. Fans have been worshiping this film since its release in 1975. There are just two things that I can compliment this film on. The colors and hairdo's were so poorly done it made folks look washed out. I felt it had all the right intentions, but too many restrictions to be an apple to apples comparison. They paid someone to cast this? Magenta andColumbia were more marginal than in the original and Eddie's cameo wasalmost completely pointless if not for the fact that he is used as apostmortem device later on in the film. It's quite understandable that some fans have watched this film every Saturday at Midnight for the past 30 years. I get the feeling the producers understood that Rocky Horror was still hip with the kids these days and wanted to appeal to this generation as much as possible. Ashford's performance was unfortunately handicapped by the incomparable performance by Nell Campbell in the original.

This was a straight, no frills presentation sans the hooplah that was soon to become part and parcel of most screenings of the film.
